Krypton Suite 4.4.0 Serial
The first victim of the serial is the bellboy Hawkman, killed in a shower fight with a wounded Captain Marvel. But the fight is only a foretaste of what is to come. The next face to turn up on the morgue slab is that of the consummate villain, the arch-criminal Doctor Cobra, in a full-frontal mankini on the verge of disintegration, writhing around in the cell of the Nurse Midwife. Swayed by the Doctor's hypnotic promise that he can turn his most vicious rivals, to Captain Marvel's wife, against each other, Captain Marvel gives up the identity that has protected him and shatters the world he'd once thought he knew. It takes from here a pendulum swing between the power plays of Doctor Cobaltothe world-soul of peace and good. The cycle of violence is energised by the emergence of evil when, to avenge her husband's death, the Nurse Midwife discovers Captain Marvel's half-sister, the ingeniously named Star Sapphire. Fiercely committed to the idea of peace as a means of safeguarding her brother, the Nurse Midwife nevertheless finds herself transported in another form by the wizard Shazam, and her anger at being forced into this form is manifest. "My... great purpose," she proclaims in a rage, "is to stop other people from killing each other".
No one is safe in the world of 30 adventures that the serial provides, which defy the natural linearity of narrative. An entire bus of wedding guests meet with gruesome deaths when a freak accident releases an army of demons from a crashed spaceship. And when the Greek demigod Hercules crashes onto the Moon - shot on location, as it happens, by the veteran cinematographer Walker Hood - another and more profound terror is released on the Earth. The slow-burning, insinuating terror of 30 is the very opposite of the flash of horror. There is little suggestion of menace. The grim, stoic tone of 30's predecessor 4&em; 3&em; 2&em; 1&em; (1949) is perfectly compatible with the covert undercurrents of 30. Its ultimate threat is at once specific and nebulous. And the darkness has been deepened by the fallibility of the protagonists. Captain Marvel's reliance on his wife, as it turns out, has led to the death of his best friend Hawkman. Captain Marvel himself is revealed to be a figure of myth and legend rather than a real person: a power-craving, brutal murderer with a family history of madness and bad luck who uses a trademark buzzword, "Gee whiz!" to disguise his tortured inner life. 3d9ccd7d82
