The movie revolves around two brothers, Kishen (Jackie Shroff) and Karan (Anil Kapoor), who get caught in the crossfire of a gang war between the ruthless Anna (Nana Patekar) and his rival Abdul (Anupam Kher). Kishen works for Anna as his right-hand man, while Karan is an innocent college student who dreams of becoming an engineer. When Karan's friend Prakash (Suresh Oberoi) is killed by Anna's men, Karan decides to join the police force and avenge his death. However, he soon realizes that his brother is also involved in the crime world, and has to face a dilemma between his loyalty to his family and his duty to the law.
Parinda is known for its realistic portrayal of the underworld, its gritty cinematography, its powerful performances and its memorable music. The movie broke many conventions of the typical Bollywood masala film, and introduced a new style of filmmaking that influenced many directors in the subsequent years. Parinda was also one of the first Indian movies to use Dolby Stereo sound technology, enhancing the impact of its sound effects and background score.
